As you will see below, our unit includes members depicting a wide variety of impressions which were present in a line regiment in 1810.Our members are considered as part of either the 1st or 2nd battalions depending on where they live. Within each battalion of our re-enactment unit, we have a grenadier, a voltigeur and one fusilier company.
Historically, the 3me regiment d’infanterie de ligne in 1810 had 4 battalions, the 4th being the depot battalion.
Each battalion included 6 companies of 120 men. A battalion included one Grenadier Company, one Voltigeur Company, and four Fusilier Companies. The Grenadier and Voltigeur Companies were considered elite.
The members of our group all have a nickname, also known as a nom de guerre. These names are chosen by the member or by others in the group because they ,in some way, speak about the individual.
During the French Royal regime of the 17th and 18th century, the use of nom de guerres was not only frequent but also had military significance. Members of a given company were issued names all beginning by the same letter, another company issued names starting with another letter. You could find soldiers known as Lafleur, Latulippe, Labonté in one company and Sans-chagrin, Sans-souci, Sans-regret and Sans-facon in the next company. This practice was no longer in use in the early 19th century.
